From the MCR steward, Justin Bishop:

I am happy to open applications for the 2009 Boar’s Feast, to take place on Friday, 13 February.

The Boar’s Feast is the second of three highlight events for the academic year and is held in honour of King Richard III, recognized as the most generous benefactor of the College, and his badge of the silver boar.

The evening begins with a drinks reception in the Old Kitchens at 1845, before we move over to the Old Hall for a 6-course meal. A cocktail party follows in the Old Kitchens once more.

Event details:

Timings: 1845 (drinks reception) – 2300

Venue: Old Kitchens, Old Hall

Dress: Black tie

Gowns: None Price: £27 for Queens’ members, £29 for guests. Price includes all drinks at the reception, wine during the meal, and the cocktail party following.

Payment: Details will be sent to applicants directly.

To apply, please reply to Justin: j d k b 2 at cam (etc.) with the following information:

1) Your name (as you wish it to appear on the name place card)

2) Your course degree, length and which year you are in

3) The names of your guests (Each student is permitted up to 2 guests only)

4) Dietary requirements (including allergies) of you and your guests

5) Seating preferences* (if you wish to sit with another group of students)

*Due to seating constraints in the Old Hall, seating preferences cannot be guaranteed.

Deadline: Applications are due by email to jdkb2@cam.ac.uk no later than 12 noon on Friday, 30 January.

Ballot and priority selection:

This event is usually oversubscribed. A ballot will be used to determine who will attend. Priority is given to students on one year courses, those who are in their first or last years and those who have not attended a Feast this year already. The intention is that every student who applies be able to go to at least one Feast while they are at Queens’. Any alumni who wish to attend are invited to apply.

Please note that priority at Feasts and Guest Nights are separate. Therefore, you cannot trade your Guest Night places for Feast tickets, or vice versa.

Notification of results:

Applicants will be emailed collectively on Monday, 2 February with the results of their applications, and a waiting list if applicable.

If your application is unsuccessful on this occasion, you will be given priority for the next Feast that you apply for. The last Feast in this academic year is on Friday 8 May. An email announcing the opening of applications will be sent out closer to the event date.

If you have any questions about the information above, including dietary concerns or places to hire dinner suits, please contact me directly.

I look forward to receiving your applications.

Sincerely,

Justin Bishop

Since the lack of MCR formals leaves such a void in so many people’s hearts and social calendars, we’ve arranged with the Qbar staff to hold QUEENS’ GRADS DRINKS on non-formal Thursdays, beginning Thurs. 22 January!

So join us in the bar, from 8 pm till close, for drinks specials on 2 kinds of beers, 1 type of wine, and Tequila Sunrises (we’ll have 1 cocktail special per event, which will change each time). Your friends are welcome to join you and enjoy the normal – very low – Qbar prices.

By popular demand (see we do listen to your feedback), and following the success of the last one, there’ll be another MCR pub-crawl this Saturday. We’ll keep things simple. There’ll be 4 pubs, you start at one, drink your beer (insert other beverage of choice) and walk/crawl/stumble/run (delete as applicable based on inebriation and keenness), rinse and repeat.

The schedule which I will be making sure everyone keeps too like a jumped up dictators private army herding people to the ballot box will be as follows;

8.00pm at the Cross Keys
8.30pm The Snug (which used to be called the Spread Eagle many years ago)
9.15pm The Panton Arms
10.00pm The Alma

An excellent map of pubs in the center of Cambridge can be found here (although our pubcrawl master Doug doesn’t agree with all the ratings). You’ll see all the pubs selected at the bottom of the map around the Panton St area cunningly chosen to be convenient for the people living in that area (so no excuses) and to minimise distances between beers.
