Letter to New Students

Welcome to Cambridge, and welcome to Queens’ College! With close to four hundred graduate students, Queens’ hosts one of the biggest grad populations in Cambridge. As a result, we can boast of an exceptionally energetic grad social life, intellectual community, and supportive atmosphere.

As you have probably already realised, the college is an entirely separate entity from your department or faculty. While your academic department will inevitably be the centre of your academic life, the college can – if you wish – be a centre of your social life, and a source of many types of support throughout your career at Cambridge. It’s important for you to know that this college is one particularly committed to the welfare of grads as individuals and as a community.

As a grad here, you’re automatically a member of the Middle Combination Room, or the ‘MCR’. ‘The MCR’ is a shorthand way of referring both to the collective body of grads at Queens’ and to our common room (The Woodville Room), which is at the foot of AA staircase, just across from the Porters’ Lodge. The students of the MCR are represented by the MCR committee, and our purpose is to be activists on your behalf to the college, as well as to create an enjoyable social life for you here. Please feel free to contact us — we’re happy to help you out in any way we can.
