The Café

The Queens’ Café is located in the Qbar, and is the best deal in town for coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. It’s open Monday to Friday, 9:30am – 5pm. There’s also Wireless access through Lapwing.

Formal Hall

This is a waitressed, 3 course meal served Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday during term. Dinner starts at 7:30– plan to arrive a few minutes early. Formals must be booked online by noon the day beforehand using the Cashless system. The price for 2009/2010 is £7.90 for Queens’ members and £9.10 for guests. The dress code is ‘smart’. In practice this means that men generally wear a suit or other dress clothes, and women wear whatever they feel is appropriate. Members of Queens’ must wear gowns, but guests don’t need to. If you want wine you need to bring your own (limit of one bottle per Queens’ member). If you forget, bottles are usually available for purchase in the Qbar beforehand.

MCR Formal Hall

Every second Thursday during term (see the calendar), Formal Hall is set aside for graduates. Sherry is served (usually in the Qbar) by the Woodville Steward at 6:45, dinner begins at 7:30, and complimentary port follows the meal. MCR Formals are when we also host formal exchanges, so they’re a good opportunity to meet grads from other colleges as well!

Formal Hall Exchanges

Queens’ is energetically involved in formal hall exchanges; groups of Queens’ members travel to Formal Halls at other colleges to sample a different atmosphere and get to know other students over fine food and wine. In return, we invite colleges who host us to MCR formals at Queens’. The exchanges are organized by the aptly named Exchange Officer (Esther Kang and Jo Tucka for 2009-2010), who send an email to the MCR mailing list to advertise exchanges. Reply to these emails ASAP, since exchanges are often popular and space is limited!

Mid-Table Dining

At least once a year you should receive an email from the Graduate Administrator, Robbie Kneale, inviting you to ‘Midtable Dining’ with your tutor. This is essentially a free formal hall with pre- and post- dinner drinks, and you will sit with the fellows, as well as the other students who your tutor is entertaining. It’s a great opportunity to chat with your tutor and meet other Queens’ students.

Guest Nights

Guest Nights are slightly more formal than Formal Halls, and are held twice a term in the beautiful Old Hall. You may apply to bring up to two guests. The price is under £20 per person, and does not include alcohol (although you are welcome to bring wine). Note that the Old Hall only seats 114 people, and therefore spaces for Guest Nights are strictly limited. The MCR usually holds ballots for spots, which are administered by the MCR Steward.

Feasts

Feasts are the most extravagant dining experiences at Queens’, and our MCR feasts are famous throughout the University. There are three feasts a year, with one held every term in the beautiful Old Hall. The cost for these five-course meals is usually about £30 for Queens’ members, and a few pounds more for guests (the price is adjusted to meet the costs of the food); these prices include drinks before, during, and after the meal. The dress code is black tie. You may apply for up to two guest tickets. Note that the Old Hall only seats 114 people, and therefore spaces for Feasts  are strictly limited. The MCR usually holds ballots for spots, which are administered by the MCR Steward.
